The seal paste ink is dry: what to do?

Seal paste (印泥), also called seal ink or cinnabar paste, is an essential accessory for using traditional Chinese seals. Over time, it may lose moisture, harden, or no longer mark paper properly. Fortunately, in most cases, it can be revived.

Several factors can cause seal paste to dry out:

  • The jar has been left open too long.
  • The lid is no longer perfectly airtight.
  • The paste is stored in a warm or dry environment.
  • It has not been used for a long time.

A well-maintained seal paste can retain its qualities for many years.

How to restore dry seal paste?

👉 Recommended method

1. Gently mix the paste

Using the provided stick or a clean bamboo or plastic spatula, slowly stir the paste. Pigments and oils may have separated over time; a homogeneous mix can often improve its texture.

2. Add a few drops of suitable oil

If the paste has become too dry, you can add a very small amount of oil specially designed for seal pastes. Otherwise, some very light mineral oils are sometimes used, but it is best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Add the oil drop by drop, then mix thoroughly before adding more. Too much oil can make the paste too liquid and affect the clarity of the imprint.

3. Let it rest

After mixing, carefully close the jar and let the paste rest for several hours or even a whole day. This allows the oil to distribute evenly throughout the paste.

To preserve your seal paste, avoid the following mistakes:

  • Adding water.
  • Using cooking oils (olive, sunflower, etc.).
  • Heating the paste to soften it.
  • Mixing with metal objects that may contaminate the paste.

These practices can permanently damage the quality of the ink.

A few simple steps can extend its lifespan:

  • Always close the jar immediately after use.
  • Keep it away from sunlight and high heat.
  • Use the paste regularly to maintain a consistent texture.
  • Gently mix it from time to time, even if you don't use it frequently.

With regular maintenance and proper storage conditions, your seal paste can accompany you for many years, whether you are a calligraphy enthusiast, seal collector, or passionate about traditional Chinese art.
