How to remove glue from a new brush (开笔)
When you buy a calligraphy brush, the bristles are often attached with a glue or paste to protect the tip during shipping. Before you can use it, you need to dissolve this glue .
Steps to follow
-
Prepare warm water
- Use a bowl of lukewarm water (< 30°C).
- Above all, do not use boiling water, as this would damage the hairs.
-
Dissolve the glue gently
- Rub the hairs very gently between your thumb and forefinger to remove the glue.
- Never pull sharply, this will break the hairs.
-
Soak the tip
- Dip only the tip of the brush into lukewarm water.
- Let it soak...
- The hair will gradually soften.
-
Reshape the tip
- Smooth the hairs with your fingers to reform a neat tip.
- Allow to air dry, preferably hanging or laying flat.
⚠️ To be avoided absolutely
- Do not break the dry glue by forcing: risk of damaging the brush.
- Do not use water that is too hot.
- Do not soak for too long (this can soften the base of the bristles).
